The castle chapel

The Chapel
Available year-round

The church in Odsherred has witnessed many solemn occasions over the years and continues to host ceremonies that resonate with history and spirit.

Dragsholm Slot is among Denmark's oldest functioning secular buildings. The original palace was likely constructed by Bishop Peder Sunesen of Roskilde around 1215.

During the Middle Ages, the palace was expanded into a four-winged fortress complex, with the church located in the west wing. This church was probably moved to its current location in the late 15th century.

In 1730, Christian Lente von Adeler completed the restoration of the church in the Baroque architectural style. This style has been preserved through various restorations, maintaining the church's appearance as it is today.

Today, the chapel at Dragsholm Castle serves as a parish church with services on Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday and regularly throughout the summer season from Pentecost to harvest. Baptisms are held in connection with services, and weddings are conducted for residents of Fårevejle Parish as well as for people with a connection to the church.

In exceptional cases, weddings can be arranged in the Castle Church through Dragsholm Castle, provided that the wedding celebration is held at the castle.

For many couples, it is the connection between the church, the castle and the surrounding landscape that makes the day so meaningful. The ceremony in the historic church interior, the passage through the rooms of the castle and the celebration in the adjoining halls create a natural sense of continuity, where every moment finds its place.

The 800-year-old Dragsholm Castle is among Denmark’s oldest functioning secular buildings. The original Dragsholm was not referred to as a castle, but as a palatium. The palatium was built by Bishop Peder Sunesen of Roskilde around 1215.

During the Middle Ages, the palatium was expanded and transformed into a four-winged fortress with a church in the west wing. The church, or chapel, is first mentioned on 21 August 1536, but is believed to be considerably older. It was most likely moved to its current location towards the end of the 15th century.

After the Swedish Wars from 1657 to 1660, the church appears not to have been in use for a long period. It was not until 8 April 1730 that Christian Lente von Adeler completed the restoration of the church in the Baroque architectural style and requested that it be consecrated as soon as possible.

The consecration, however, was delayed by the priest in Fårevejle, who demanded additional payment for serving at the castle. On 4 May 1731, the King confirmed that the church had once again been arranged for the person who kept “Dug og Disk” at the castle, and that services were to be conducted by the priest of Fårevejle.

Today, the Castle Church stands as a living witness to the history of Dragsholm. A place where faith, tradition and human moments continue to meet beneath the same vaults.
